Admission Requirements

Admission of candidates into the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) programme will be based on academic merit. All eligible applicants must fulfil the minimum university requirements for admission to full-time undergraduate studies.

(a) Academic Ability/Subject Requirements

To be eligible to apply for admission, applicants need to present one of the following:

  • The Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ level certificate: applicants should satisfy the subject pre-requisites which require a pass in any two of the following at H2 Level: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computing and Mathematics.
  • Any diploma from a polytechnic in Singapore.
  • Equivalent international qualifications: A HL pass in an International Baccalaureate, in any two of the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computing and Mathematics are required.   • NUS High School qualifications: Major CAP of at least 2.0 in any two of the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics

(c) Interview

Candidates may be asked to attend an interview in April. The selection of students for the BSc (Nursing) programme will be determined by factors over and above the candidates’ academic record.

Advanced Placement Credits for Local Diploma Holders

Applicants presenting an acceptable Diploma from a Polytechnic in Singapore can apply. Candidates who are holders of some specified diplomas obtained not more than 5 years ago may be granted Advanced Placement Credits (APC) for the BSc (Nursing) programme.

How long is the Nursing Degree programme?

The Bachelor of Science (Nursing) is a 3-year full-time programme. Students who have performed well throughout the programme would be offered the opportunity to proceed to the Honours year leading to the award of Bachelor of Science (Nursing)(Honours).

How to apply to the NUS Nursing degree programme?

Please logon to the NUS Office of Admissions website at http://www.nus.edu.sg/oam/apply-to-nus.html on information of the admissions process.

Can diploma graduates apply to the NUS Nursing degree programme? Will I get exemptions for my subjects taken in the polytechnics?

Yes. Diploma graduates from a polytechnic in Singapore can apply to NUS Nursing. It does not have to be a Nursing diploma. Over the years, we have admitted many students who have graduated with a non-nursing discipline from a local polytechnic. Advanced Placement Credits (APC) may be granted to certain diplomas. The extent of advanced standing for diploma holders from a local polytechnic will be reviewed and granted in accordance with NUS rules and regulations.

What are the admission requirements for entry into the Nursing Degree programme? Are there any pre-requisites for entry into the Nursing Degree programme?

Does this programme accept mature students?

Yes. Students who have met the admission requirements can apply.

If I have a degree from other disciplines, can I get exemptions or advanced standing as well?

Yes. A case-by-case basis which will only be considered after you have successfully gained admission into the nursing programme.

How different is the BSc (Nursing) programme different from the diploma programme?

Our programme plans to develop nursing leader for the future. It has a strong emphasis on critical thinking, health and physical assessment, pharmacology, psychology and sociology. Students can take elective modules outside of Nursing. The honours year gives students the opportunity to conduct research.

Does the programme provide internship opportunities? If yes, can students choose which hospital they want to do their internship with?

Students are required to undergo compulsory clinical postings as part of the programme requirement. The student’s choice of hospital postings will be taken into consideration.

Where will the classes be conducted?

Classes on academic modules will be conducted in NUS campus and the clinical modules will be conducted in the various healthcare institutions in Singapore or NUS Centre for Healthcare Simulation.

Is the BSc (Nursing) recognised by universities in other countries? If I do the BSc (Nursing) at NUS, can I do my master’s and PhD studies overseas?

The NUS BSc (Nursing) degree is a programme that meets international standards. Graduates who want to do their Master’s and PhD studies overseas will need to fulfil the admission requirements of the respective universities.

What is the starting pay for a registered nurse, i.e. fresh graduate from BSc (Nursing) graduates?

For an Registered Nurse with degree qualifications, the annual starting salary (including bonuses and allowances) is around $53,700. (source: MOH Care To Go Beyond 2016)

Are BSc (Nursing) graduates bonded to work in government hospitals or health care industry?

They will be bonded if they receive a sponsorship or scholarship offered by a healthcare institution.

Is the BSc (Nursing) recognised by hospitals in other countries? With the BSc (Nursing) degree, can I practise as a nurse in other countries e.g. US?

The NUS BSc (Nursing) degree is a programme that meets international standards. For graduates who would like to practise in other countries, they will need to fulfil the registration requirements of the country that they would like to practise in.
